This series explores the history of the artist’s print, a subject that leaves lasting impressions to this day, and runs alongside Northampton Museum and Art Gallery’s exhibition showcasing the works of print-maker John McGowan. We will watch a pre-recorded talk to the Royal Meteorological Society by Dr Chloe Brimcombe, Heatwave Researcher at the University of Reading. There were many record-breaking and unprecedented heatwaves around the world in 2022 including Argentina, Australia, India, Pakistani, China and across Europe and parts of the US. This makes this a very important year to review in terms of not only the meteorology of heatwaves but also in terms of impacts.

Jeff Lynne and ELO famously carried on the legacy of The Beatles where in the band’s own words wanted to “Carry on from where ‘I am the Walrus’ left off’ and combined Classical music with motifs of the greats with Rock and Roll like no other musician before. The album ‘Out of the Blue’ released in 1977 catapulted them into Rock history and truly made them one of the biggest bands in the world at the time. After many years of touring Jeff parted ways with the band to focus on producing some of the greatest musicians of the time namely, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Paul McCartney and The Beatles. Jeff resurrected the ELO legacy in 2014 with a new line-up and a mammoth stage show and has been touring the World Arenas and stadiums to this day. The ELO SHOW has an amazing light and laser show and 3D video screens very similar to Jeff’s current backdrop....
This exhibition by John McGowan includes work from his entire art output, from an early piece of pure colour abstraction through to a print sequence about the Northampton Canal, a subject to which he has recently returned. The exhibition will explore and explain a variety of techniques and styles, particularly screen printing. Victorian signal boxes, warehouses and bridges also provide themes for his prints and paintings. Free entry

The tour will allow you to visit areas of the Guildhall which are not always open to the public. We meet in the Spencer Percival foyer of the Guildhall. This is the entrance to the old part of the Guildhall by the public toilets and statue of Spencer Percival. From there. we will explore areas including council and public meeting rooms, the old Town Hall keepers living quarters and the basement cells. The maximum group size for tours is 12. Although all public areas of the building are accessible by lift, the basement can only be reached by stairs. Due to uneven floors in places, please wear appropriate footwear. This tour is not suitable for children under 8 years old. All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Tours will last approximately 1 hour.
Master cordwainer, shoe historian, and calceologist (shoe archaeologist) Brett Walker will introduce the topic of Northampton's renowned shoemaking industry during Britain's proto-industrial ascendancy in the global market, during an era when superlative-quality handmade shoes were still accepted as commonplace. Drawing on over 23 years’ experience as a traditionally educated boot- and shoemaker and professional historian, Mr. Walker presents an engaging look at what was one of the most common skilled trades in Great Britain. Highlights will include examples of shoes within the collection of the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery, and previously unpublished information on contemporary calceology discoveries.

Ruddygore is Gilbert & Sullivan’s well-loved satirical take on Victorian Melodrama, with a plot that has everything; ghosts, witches, curses, disguises, a wicked villain who tries to make off with the fair maiden, and of course love. Ruddygore follows the spooky goings-on in a peaceful Cornish fishing village, a painfully shy farmer, Robin Oakapple, trying to work up the courage to ask the beautiful Rose Maybud for her hand, a family secret that has the potential to change everything, and an ancient picture gallery brought to life to haunt its owner, much to the annoyance of the ancestral ghosts! Under the direction of Leon Berger and musical direction of David Chambers, join us as ‘the night wind howls’ to cheer the hero, weep with the heroine and boo the villain as we head to the peaceful village of Rederring, and Gilbert & Sullivan’s supernatural opera Ruddygore, presented in its original version.
