We hope to have a Paramecium culture to look and study, as well as some other members of this huge and varied group of protists in hay infusions and pond samples. These are a great group to try out various contrast techniques such as phase contrast, dark field etc.

As snowflakes fall outside, the warm glow of the open fire sends flickering shadows across the boughs of the Christmas tree and all the presents beneath. When midnight strikes we are swept away to a fairy-tale world where nothing is quite as it seems; toy dolls spring to life, the Mouse-king and his mouse-army battle with the Nutcracker Prince and we travel through the Land of Snow to an enchanted place where the magic really begins…

CRITIQUING NIGHT. Members should bring in up to 2 digital images or prints onthe night.   The images can be any they would likecritiqued, or maybe ones they are thinking of entering into a future competition. Each person in turn will be asked to critique an image and to discuss how it maybe improved.  This isn’t a competitionbut an opportunity to practice critiquing and to learn from our own and eachother's images. About this month's book: Daisy & The Six follows a rock band in the 1970s from their rise in the LA music scene to becoming one of the most famous bands in the world and explores the reason behind their split at the height of their success.. NFF’s Youth Disability Advisory Board presents a selection of shorts for schools (12A)

This invitation-only event will be screening a selection of short films to secondary school and college age young people. We're showing two films from the NFF 2025 shortlist - plus a selection of films chosen by our Youth Disability Advisory Board made by or starring people with disabilities provided by Oska Bright Film Festival, the world’s leading festival for films made by or featuring people with learning disabilities or autism. Sarah Leigh will take part in a Q&A after the screening of her film 'One For The Road'. All our venues are wheelchair accessible.

Contemporary Stitched Textiles The Bassett-Lowke Rooms Sat 8 Mar 2025 - Sun 25 May 2025 An exhibition of Contemporary Stitched Art Textiles We are delighted to be hosting this new exhibition of textiles and mixed media work which has been created by the Visualise textile group. Visualise was formed several years ago, by like-minded artists who enjoy creating diverse work with stitch as the common thread. The exhibition will also feature work by internationally known textile artist and Embroiderers Guild member Nigel Cheney who is the current mentor to Visualise. On display is a diverse array of abstract, realistic and figurative art using a wide variety of media: paper, fabric (new, distressed and recycled) and found objects which are hand and machine stitched, or felted to create art inspired by both the natural world and the built environment. The exhibition includes textile art inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and 78 Derngate itself, with framed and small items for sale. Combining a look round the iconic Charles Rennie Mackintosh House before visiting the exhibition, gardens and shop, followed by partaking of some drink or food in The Dining Room is the perfect way to spend a glorious few hours in Northampton...

An exhibition about the history of shoemaking in Northampton. Northampton Museum & Art Gallery Saturday 28 September 2024 - Sunday 15 March 2025 The shoemaking industry has been part of Northamptonshire's history for hundreds of years. This exhibition will look at how the industry has affected the lives of the people of Northamptonshire and beyond, not only through employment but providing hospitals, carnivals, days out and Christmas parties. It will explore the history of the biggest employers in Northamptonshire through personal stories and artefacts.
