Christmas Customs – Why we do what we do (or did) over the festive season (Wednesday 9 December at 7pm)
The latest online workshop from Northampton Museum and Art gallery will take you on a journey from Turkey to Santa himself. Relax into Christmas with social history expert Sharn Matthews and spend an hour discovering the history behind Christmas traditions, learning how these have evolved over time. The talk will look at selected food, decorations, and events, all illustrated with a mixture of historic images and Christmas cards.
Christmas is very much a time for traditions, with each generation and family adding to the accepted ideas of what and how the festivities should be conducted. The resulting mixture has pagan and Christian elements blended with imported and commercial ideas to make the season special. You may be surprised how old or young some traditions are.
This hour-long talk and Q&A will provide a moment of calm in a month often far too busy – best accompanied by a mince pie and tipple of your choice!
To be able to access the talk you will need to use Zoom from your smartphone, tablet, laptop or PC. The talk will be a private Zoom meeting and joining details will be sent after a ticket has been purchased. You will be able to join the call using video or audio only if you would prefer not to appear on screen.
