Paul McManus is Director McManus Pub Co Ltd and is a keynote speaker at the BID’s Renewal event this month …
A little about my business: McManus was established in Northampton 50 years ago, on March 16h 1970 when my parents, Mick and Anne McManus, bought their first pub – Thomas A Becket.
For the last 25 years, since our parents retired, I have run the business with my brother Gary. We have 18 pubs, of which 16 are in Northamptonshire. We employ over 200 people and have invested £2 million pound in our business in the last two years. We also have a great training portal for our staff and like to coach and mentor and provide on the job training. Now we have 10 employees with over 10 years’ service each, two with over 15 years, one employee with 20 years’ experience and another with 30.
Pub life: I have worked in the pub business all my life and started working behind the bar in 1987. I now head up the property maintenance side of the business – while still getting involved in day to day operations.
COVID-19: At the start of 2020 we hoped to raise £50 for three local charities including Cynthia Spencer Hospice. By lock down in March we had reached more than £23,000. It has been incredibly challenging for us all though – keeping standards high while looking after everyone – our staff and customers.
And finally: Keep practising, keep improving, love what you do or change it and have fun along the way. Treat others with respect – even if at first they appear not to deserve it.
